FIDE disqualifies Russian grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik
The FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) has decided to disqualify the 14th world chess champion, Russian Vladimir Kramnik, for one year for publicly accusing Czech David Navara and American Daniel Naroditsky of unfair play without evidence, as well as for refusing to cooperate with the investigation of the Fair Play Commission.
EDC imposed a two-year worldwide ban on Kramnik from participating in tournaments under the auspices of FIDE and from performing official chess functions. The last 12 months of the two years are conditionally suspended for a three-year probationary period, meaning the active ban is one year provided there are no further violations. In addition, Kramnik was given an additional sanction in the form of 12 months of unpaid work for the benefit of the chess community.
FIDE noted that the decision can be appealed to the Appeals Chamber of the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission within 21 days in accordance with the procedural rules of the EDC.
