Merz prepares to blame Russia for the drone attack at the Leipzig airport

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz intends to hold Russia responsible for the attempted drone attack at the Leipzig airport and to announce large-scale sanctions against Moscow.

As 1news.az reports, this was announced by Politico and Welt am Sonntag, citing sources.

According to them, the German government's plan provides for the imposition of direct sanctions against Russian organizations. At the same time, the European Union is preparing a new package of restrictive measures against Russia.

One of the sources noted that after the incident in Leipzig, Berlin no longer considers the expulsion of individual Russian diplomats or the closure of the Russian House in Berlin to be sufficient. In his words, tougher measures are needed, including the strengthening of sanctions or even a further increase in arms supplies to Ukraine.

The sources did not specify which measures exactly Merz intends to announce. It is also not yet known to what extent Berlin plans to place responsibility for the attempted attack on individual Russian citizens or directly on the Russian government.

Merz's statement is expected to be made early next week, coinciding with the meeting of EU foreign ministers scheduled for September 1 in Ireland. At the same time, two sources did not rule out that the statement could be made earlier.

In addition, it is reported that Germany, for its part, is preparing for a possible harsh reaction from Moscow and retaliatory measures from Russia.

Recall that at the Leipzig airport a strike drone deliberately crashed into a Ukrainian cargo plane but did not explode.
