Axios: The U.S. does not consider Israel's strike on the Syrian airfield justified

The United States does not consider the Israeli Air Force's strike on an airfield in Syria justified from a military standpoint and believes it could have been avoided. This was reported by the Axios portal, citing American officials.

From Washington's point of view, the Syrian authorities have not taken any hostile steps toward Israel in recent months and have been trying to achieve a new security agreement, having secured de-escalation in bilateral relations. The U.S. also believes that the Israeli authorities themselves escalated matters with regard to Syria. Some American diplomats believe the strike could have been connected to the upcoming elections to the Israeli parliament (the Knesset), since the ruling coalition needs to demonstrate results in the field of security.

The United States, through diplomatic channels, has urged the Syrian authorities to show restraint regarding possible responses to Israel's actions. Washington believes it will be easier for Damascus to achieve concrete progress on de-escalation after the elections in the Jewish state.

Separately, Axios notes that Israel warned the U.S. about the upcoming strike on the Syrian airfield.

Earlier, the Syria TV channel, citing a source, reported that the Israeli Air Force had carried out several strikes on the Abu al-Duhur airfield in Idlib province, located in northwestern Syria. According to its information, the attacks resulted in material damage. Later, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a statement according to which Syria had allowed the deployment of Turkish troops at an air base near Aleppo. The U.S. ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, commenting on the incident, announced work on creating a mechanism to prevent conflicts between Israel, Syria, and Turkey.
