Death toll from avalanche in Kabardino-Balkaria rises to 16 climbers
During the search and rescue operation in the Bezengi Gorge of Kabardino-Balkaria, the bodies of two more climbers who died in the avalanche have been found.
As 1news.az reports, this was announced by the press service of the regional Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.
Thus, the number of victims has risen to 16 people. The fate of one more climber remains unknown, the statement says.
The agency noted that search and rescue operations at the site of the incident have been suspended due to worsening weather conditions and the threat of a snow and ice mass coming down. The search is planned to resume on September 13 with the involvement of a MI-8 helicopter of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.
To recall, on September 6 an avalanche came down from Mount Mizhirgi in the Bezengi Gorge of Kabardino-Balkaria onto a group of 33 climbers who were passing along the route. Earlier, 14 deaths were reported.
