WHO reports monitoring the situation with monkeypox in Russia
The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring the epidemiological situation in the Moscow region of the Russian Federation, where cases of monkeypox infection have been detected.
This was stated to the local publication 'RIA Novosti' by WHO official representative Tarik Jasarevic.
According to him, two infected patients are receiving treatment at the Domodedovo hospital.
'WHO is overseeing the development of the situation through its monitoring system and interaction with the health authorities of the Russian Federation,' noted T. Jasarevic.
He clarified that there are currently no medical drugs in the world specifically developed to combat the monkeypox virus. Treatment of the infected, the specialist said, is based on other approaches, among which symptom relief and prevention of possible medical complications are of key importance.
Earlier, epidemiologist and academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Onishchenko told TASS that another case, the third in Russia since the beginning of the year, of monkeypox infection was recorded in the Moscow region.
'This is bad; we are already seeing local transmission,' the scientist said.
