Turkish parliament approves ban on social media access for children under 15

The Turkish parliament has approved an initiative restricting minors' access to popular online platforms, obliging providers to ensure a safe digital environment.

Turkish lawmakers have passed a law banning children under 15 from using social media, reports RIA Novosti. The initiative was introduced by a group of 70 deputies from the ruling alliance.

“The parliament has approved the bill submitted by 70 deputies to amend the law on social services and several other laws,” the parliament's press service stated.

The new rules require internet providers to block access for teenagers under 15, while for children over 15, a separate safe environment isolated from adult content must be created.

The document also introduces parental control mechanisms. Adults will be able to limit the time a child spends in front of a screen and monitor spending in online games.

In addition, the law extends maternity leave from 16 to 24 weeks and prohibits individuals with convictions for serious crimes from working in educational institutions.

According to the Minister of Family and Social Services, Mahinur Göktaş, the innovations aim to create a safe digital space for the younger generation. The document must be signed by the President of Turkey to come into effect.
