CNN: USA and Iran discuss returning to pre-conflict status quo
The first stage of a potential peace agreement between Iran and the United States could be a return to the pre-conflict status quo, reports CNN.
According to the network, despite the second round of talks between the parties not yet taking place, their positions are 'not as far apart as they might seem.' Sources cited by the outlet claim that intensive behind-the-scenes diplomatic work is underway, focused on a phased resolution of the conflict. The first part of this could involve restoring free passage through the Strait of Hormuz and returning to pre-conflict positions. The issue of Iran's nuclear program will be discussed at a later stage.
Mediators, the channel reports, are putting pressure on both sides to reach an agreement, and the next few days could be crucial for the negotiation process.
On April 11, Iran and the United States held several rounds of talks in Islamabad. The Iranian delegation was led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, while the American delegation was headed by Vice President JD Vance. As later reported in Tehran and Washington, the parties failed to reach an agreement on the issue of long-term conflict resolution due to a number of disagreements. Details of a possible new round of talks remain unknown.
