King Charles III speaks in US Congress in support of Ukraine
King Charles III of the United Kingdom addressed both chambers of the US Congress in Washington on Tuesday, April 28.
The British monarch urged the United States not to turn away from its allies amid geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran and Ukraine.
"The challenges we face are too great for any single country to tackle alone," he pointed out.
In the year marking the 250th anniversary of US independence from the United Kingdom, the king reminded that the partnership between the two nations "was born out of disagreement, yet has nonetheless become strong." "I pray with all my heart that our alliance continues to defend our shared values <...> and that we ignore the loud calls to further withdraw into ourselves," the British monarch said.
Charles III particularly emphasized that the same resolve seen after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, is now needed for "the defense of Ukraine and its extraordinarily courageous people - to ensure a truly just and lasting peace."
This is only the second time in history that a British monarch has addressed the American legislative body - previously, Queen Elizabeth II spoke before Congress in 1991.
