Zelenskyy responds to Putin's proposal to declare a truce on May 9
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instructed to clarify the details of Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to declare a truce on May 9, and also suggested in response to cease fire on a long-term basis.
"I have instructed our representatives to contact the team of the President of the United States and clarify the details of the Russian proposal for a short-term truce," Zelenskyy wrote on social media.
According to him, Ukraine strives for peace and ensures the necessary diplomatic work for a real end to this war. "We will find out what exactly is meant: a few hours of safety for the parade in Moscow or something more.
Our proposal is to cease fire on a long-term basis, to guarantee reliable security for people and long-term peace. Ukraine is ready to work for this in any dignified and effective format," the president noted.
As a reminder, on April 29, aide to the Russian leader Yury Ushakov stated that Vladimir Putin had a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, during which he expressed readiness to declare a "truce" on May 9.
After the conversation, U.S. President Donald Trump shared details of his talk with Putin. According to the American president, the conversation was "very good." He expressed confidence that a resolution to the Russian-Ukrainian war would come "relatively quickly." He also said that he proposed to the Kremlin leader a "short-term ceasefire."
