Mirzoyan: Armenia and Azerbaijan have taken a historic step towards opening an era of peace in the region
By committing to mutual recognition of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and the inviolability of recognized borders, Armenia and Azerbaijan have taken a historic step towards ending a decades-long conflict and opening an era of peace and stability in our region, stated Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.
“At a time when it seemed that everything around us was collapsing under the pressure of various storms, we established peace,” he said on May 5 at the international conference ‘Yerevan Dialogue — 2026’.
According to him, the historic turning point was marked by the Washington Peace Summit, as reported by Armenian media.
“For several decades, we thought we were successfully avoiding storms and maintaining our usual comfort zone by remaining detached. When the crisis erupted and the illusion of security collapsed, we found ourselves in a whirlpool, where, despite all our efforts, we were being dragged into the abyss. And somewhere in that moment, we decided to break out of this vicious spiral of history. Not to follow what others prescribed for us, but to take responsibility for making our own sovereign decisions about our destiny. Not to remain in the past, but to look forward, to build a modern, democratic, and prosperous society, a state with genuine sovereignty and territorial integrity, with a peaceful way of life under these conditions. And it was at this moment that the concept of a real Armenia was born,” Mirzoyan added.
