Pashinyan takes a pause in the process of constitutional reforms
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his team have temporarily postponed work on a new Constitution and will return to it after the parliamentary elections. This is reported by the newspaper "Graparak."
According to the publication, meetings of the council on constitutional reforms have not been held for over a month, whereas previously they took place almost weekly.
The reason for the pause is that the ruling "Civil Contract" party wants to wait for the parliamentary elections on June 7, and only based on their results, determine whether it can hold a constitutional referendum. For this, as the newspaper writes, the party needs either a constitutional majority in parliament or a coalition partner.
At the same time, despite statements by Justice Minister Srbuhi Galyan about readiness to present the draft, the party leadership, according to the publication, has not yet been acquainted with the text of the document.
Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the new Constitution should not contain references to the Declaration of Independence, as, in his assessment, this creates risks of conflict.
