WHO head recommends 42-day quarantine for evacuees from MV Hondius
Passengers evacuated from the cruise liner MV Hondius, where an outbreak of Andes hantavirus occurred, are recommended a 42-day quarantine.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated this.
"Our recommendations are clear: starting from May 10 - 42 days of active monitoring, [that is] 42 days of quarantine, and the quarantine can be carried out both in a special institution and at home," he said at a briefing following the first day of evacuation of passengers from the MV Hondius ship, which docked at the Canary Islands.
Ghebreyesus emphasized that WHO provides but does not impose its recommendations on member countries of the organization. "Countries are guided by their national recommendations and, based on risk assessment, can take appropriate measures," he added.
