Armenia states it remains a full member of the EAEU

Armenia has decided on the issue of its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU); it remains a full member of this economic association.

This was stated to journalists by the speaker of the Armenian parliament Alen Simonyan.

"Why did you decide that Armenia is in an uncertain state, are you the foreign minister? Armenia is in a very definite state. Armenia is a full member of the EAEU with all obligations and rights, and there are no talks about withdrawal," Simonyan said indignantly in response to the remark that Armenia found itself in uncertainty regarding membership in the EU and the EAEU.

To the journalist's question about what Armenia will do if at the upcoming EAEU summit in Astana on May 28-29 the issue of excluding the republic from this economic bloc is raised, Simonyan reminded that all issues in the organization are decided on the basis of consensus and Yerevan's opinion cannot be ignored. He once again emphasized that the Armenian authorities have no goal of withdrawing from the EAEU and this issue is not on their agenda. "There is no need to make a mountain out of a molehill," he said.

On May 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Yerevan should decide as soon as possible on the issue of participation in the EU or the EAEU, then a path of "civilized divorce" is possible.

Deputies of the Armenian parliament on March 26, 2025, during the second and final reading, adopted a law on the start of the process of the republic's accession to the European Union. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted that this would not mean an automatic launch of the process of Yerevan's accession to the community, since this issue requires a referendum. In turn, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan explained that the bill was a public initiative that collected the necessary number of signatures. As Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk stated, Russia views these actions as the beginning of the republic's withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union. According to him, accession to the EU is incompatible with the country's membership in the EAEU.
