FT: Moscow and Kyiv lose interest in negotiations
The chances of resuming peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine with US mediation remain low even after the end of the conflict in the Middle East.
This is reported by Financial Times, citing sources on both sides.
According to the publication, neither Moscow nor Kyiv currently “see much value in continuing negotiations,” despite statements by US President Donald Trump about the sides being close to a settlement.
As Ukrainian officials reported, Kyiv is dissatisfied that Trump has not tried to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to soften Russia’s settlement terms.
According to FT, Putin “is focused on forcefully seizing even more Ukrainian territory” and, according to the publication’s sources, intends to continue making additional demands even if he establishes control over the entire territory of Donbas.
At the same time, the Ukrainian side, as FT sources note, has become less dependent on pressure from Washington regarding the possible conclusion of an “unfavorable, quick” deal.
On May 12, Trump stated that the US and Russia have not yet been able to reach a common opinion on the issue of Donbas ownership. In turn, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov previously noted that resolving the conflict in Ukraine is an extremely complex process, and achieving a peace agreement is “a very long path.”
