Hungarian president responds to Magyar's call to resign

Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok rejected the demand of the country's new Prime Minister Peter Magyar to resign by the end of May.

Bloomberg reported this.

Sulyok stated that he intends to perform his duties within the existing constitutional system.

"My oath obligates me to the entire nation, not just the majority or minority," the Hungarian president said.

He added that he has no grounds for resigning from the post of head of state. Sulyok rejected Magyar's statements that he had lost political legitimacy.

Tamas Sulyok has held the post of President of Hungary since March 5, 2024. His term will last until 2029.

On May 9, after officially taking office as Prime Minister of Hungary, the leader of the opposition Tisza party Peter Magyar called on Tamas Sulyok to resign no later than May 31. The head of the Hungarian cabinet stated that the president should not hinder the democratic renewal of the country. According to Magyar, Sulyok, instead of serving as a guarantor of the constitution and compliance with the law, did not prevent abuses of power in the public, political, and financial spheres.

Magyar also called for the resignation of the head of the Supreme Court, the attorney general, the chairman of the Constitutional Court, and other heads of agencies in Hungary.
