Azerbaijan and Georgia once again confirmed their strategic partnership by signing a comprehensive package of agreements aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation in the spheres of economy, energy and connectivity.

The signing ceremony took place on May 18 in Baku with the participation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, according to a joint intergovernmental communiqué.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of the signed documents in terms of expanding cooperation, in particular the important role of Azerbaijan and Georgia as a connectivity hub for many countries, as well as the need for further deepening interaction in this direction.

The signed documents included intergovernmental agreements on natural gas supplies to Georgia, continuation of transit agreements for additional supplies of Azerbaijani natural gas to international markets, electricity supplies to Georgia and transit of electricity through Georgia to Turkey, as well as the Protocol of the Coordination Council confirming the final acceptance and completion of modernization works within the framework of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project.

To implement the above-mentioned intergovernmental agreements, the relevant state energy companies of both countries signed the Basic Conditions defining the key commercial parameters of the contracts, which will be concluded no later than October 15, 2026.

In addition, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), SOCAR Midstream Operations LLC (SMO) and the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation (GOGC) signed the Basic Conditions for the Operating Agreement defining the terms of operation of the Georgian section of the Western Export Pipeline, including the Supsa oil terminal and related infrastructure.

The Protocol of the Coordination Council also formalized the transfer of the relevant railway infrastructure to the joint venture BTK Railways LLC for control over the management of the railway line, which is an important step in strengthening regional connectivity. The parties additionally agreed to resume daily passenger rail service on the Baku-Tbilisi-Baku route from May 26, 2026.
