Merz calls the CDU's failure in Saxony-Anhalt the worst in recent decades

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has acknowledged that the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) suffered a "dramatic defeat" in the elections to the Landtag (regional parliament) of Saxony-Anhalt. This is reported by the newspaper Bild.

Merz called the party's defeat the heaviest election defeat the CDU has suffered in recent decades, and noted that the election results will have international consequences.

"This morning, at the meeting of the presidium and then of the federal board of Germany's CDU, we discussed these election results in detail. And I can tell you: we are all deeply shocked. We did not expect this in such a form. It goes without saying that we are obliged to accept this result — such are the rules of our democracy," Merz said at a press conference in Berlin. "I must admit: this is the heaviest election defeat the CDU has suffered in recent decades," he stated.
The German chancellor added that what has happened must have consequences. In two weeks, as he recalled, two more votes will take place in the Landtag elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and in Berlin. At the same time, Merz emphasized that after the elections in Saxony-Anhalt the situation has changed not only in this region, but throughout Germany. "And these election results will have consequences. They will also affect the international situation," Merz stated.
