European Commission drops plan to create EU defense group
The European Commission has confirmed that it is abandoning the creation of an EU High-Level Group on Defense, which the head of the EU diplomatic service, Kaja Kallas, had been trying to form.
The group's first meeting, scheduled for today, has been canceled.
This was announced by European Commission spokesman Christian Wigand.
According to him, the meeting had been scheduled for Monday, but after consultations with EU member states, Kaja Kallas decided to abandon further work on the initiative. Wigand noted that cooperation with EU countries on defense issues will continue in other formats.
Wigand himself and the head of the European Commission's press service, Paula Pinho, declined to comment on the reasons for this decision. They advised journalists to turn to the EU countries that opposed the initiative.
