U.S. prepares to bring charges against Raul Castro
The U.S. Department of Justice may officially bring charges against former Cuban leader (2008–2018) Raul Castro. This is connected to the 1996 incident involving the destruction of two American aircraft.
Charges against the ex-Cuban leader may be filed on Wednesday, May 20, during a planned press conference in Miami dedicated to the memory of the victims of events from 30 years ago, Fox News reported, citing unnamed sources.
The New York Times previously wrote that senior White House officials are considering the possibility of arresting Castro by analogy with the scenario implemented in Venezuela in January 2026.
In early May, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order limiting the activities of foreign financial organizations that conducted transactions in the interests of sanctioned individuals and companies in Cuba.
The American leader also allowed for the possibility of sending the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln to the shores of the island.
On May 14, CIA Director John Ratcliffe met with Cuban officials during a visit to Havana, including Raul Guillermo Rodriguez Castro, the grandson of the former head of the State Council of the republic.
