US president says he does not expect escalation of situation around Cuba
US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that rising tensions around Cuba should not be expected.
"No. There will be no escalation," he told reporters in response to the corresponding question.
According to him, the Cuban authorities have lost control over the situation in the country.
However, Trump refused to answer the question of whether a scenario of actions similar to what the US took on January 3, 2026, regarding Venezuela is possible in connection with Cuba.
Earlier on Wednesday, the US Department of Justice released charges against former chairman of the Communist Party of Cuba Raul Castro and five other persons, accusing them of murders and conspiracy to murder US citizens in connection with the 1996 crash of two American planes belonging to the humanitarian organization Hermanos en rescate.
In response, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said that the attempt by US authorities to bring charges against Castro has no legal basis.
Prior to this, information appeared in American media that the US is considering the possibility of a military scenario regarding Cuba.
