Zakharova reminded Armenia of the impossibility of combining EAEU membership with integration into Eurostructures
In the absence of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the meeting of EAEU leaders, "there is no tragedy," however questions arise in the context of Yerevan's further foreign policy course, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
According to her, Moscow assesses the situation not through political statements but through concrete actions of the Armenian government related to the implementation of pro-European policy and their possible impact on Eurasian integration processes.
She stressed that the Russian side has repeatedly warned about existing contradictions between EAEU membership and deepening integration with European structures, especially in the conditions of the formation of supranational regulatory mechanisms by another integration bloc. The Russian Foreign Ministry representative recalled that similar assessments were previously voiced by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk.
Zakharova linked the Russian position to the European Union's policy toward EAEU countries: "Those very Western European, EU structures are pursuing a destructive policy, a policy of illegal sanctions against those countries that are precisely members of the EAEU."
In this regard, as the Russian Foreign Ministry representative believes, further deepening of Armenia's interaction with European institutions may lead to direct contradiction with obligations within the EAEU.
At the same time, Zakharova stressed that Moscow does not adhere to the "either-or" principle and does not oppose multi-vector cooperation as such. According to her, Russia has always proceeded from the possibility of "organically combining interaction in all directions."
However, she noted, the situation changed after Western European structures, in Moscow's opinion, began taking actions that damage the economy, trade, and financial system of Russia and its partners.
"All this has turned into a hybrid war, including in the trade dimension," Zakharova stated, referring to the West's sanctions policy.
