In London, Picasso portrait sold at auction for $1.7 million
A portrait of photographer Dora Maar, painted by artist Pablo Picasso, went under the hammer in London for 1.3 million pounds ($1.7 million).
The auction was organized by the auction house Sotheby’s.
The estimated value of the work ranged from £600,000 to £800,000. Picasso painted the portrait of Maar in November 1936, shortly after their first meeting and the start of their relationship. The artist gave this work to his beloved, who kept it until her death in 1997. Subsequently, the painting entered the collection of British businessman and investor Joe Lewis.
In addition, on June 25, "Portrait of a Standing Man," painted by French artist Claude Monet in 1864, went under the hammer. This painting was sold for £1 million ($1.3 million). Also sold at the auction were Vincent van Gogh's "Old Man Warming Himself" for £895,000 ($1.2 million), Pierre Bonnard's "Woman Who Achieved Success" for £705,000 ($930,000), and Marc Chagall's "Red Woman with Rooster" for £600,000 ($800,000).
Among the works sold during the auction were Henri Matisse's self-portrait and Edgar Degas's "Actress's Dressing Room" for £590,000 ($780,000) and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's painting "On the Staircase of Rue de Moulins" for £500,000 ($660,000). All of the listed works were part of Lewis's collection.
