The strongest magnetic storm may hit Earth

A magnetic storm caused by the arrival to Earth of a plasma cloud from an X1.1-class flare is possible on the evening of July 2.

The storm is expected to reach level G3, the laboratory of solar astronomy of IKI RAS and ISZF SB RAS reported.

Earlier, the most powerful solar flare since the beginning of June, which reached X1.1 level, was reported.

"Despite the moderate strength of the explosion (if such a term can be used for an event of the highest category), given the current position of active solar centers almost exactly on the Sun-Earth line, the impact will still be quite noticeable. Storms and radiation storms of the highest level are not expected in this case, and even the level preceding the highest (G4) is unlikely to be reached, but events of category G3 (strong) are apparently inevitable. <…> The storm that occurred is expected to be the strongest since March of this year," the message says.

It is clarified that, according to the forecast, the plasma cloud that accompanied the flare will arrive on Earth tomorrow in the range from 09:00 to 00:00 Moscow time.
