Qatar's foreign ministry reports progress in indirect US-Iran talks
Progress was achieved during indirect negotiations between the US and Iran with the participation of Qatari and Pakistani mediators in Doha on Wednesday, said Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesman Majid al-Ansari.
"Today in Doha, Qatari and Pakistani mediators held separate meetings with representatives of the US and Iran, and positive progress was achieved on issues related to the Islamabad memorandum of understanding," al-Ansari wrote on social network X.
According to him, the parties agreed to continue discussions in the near future, and the next meeting will be scheduled "as soon as possible" after the upcoming funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed as a result of American strikes at the end of February.
Iranian authorities will hold Khamenei's funeral ceremonies from July 4 to 9 on the territory of Iraq and Iran itself.
Earlier, CNN reported that on Wednesday Iran and the US are conducting indirect negotiations through mediators from Qatar and Pakistan.
Also on Wednesday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi discussed with the Qatari prime minister the implementation of the Iranian-American memorandum. This was followed by a trilateral meeting between Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan.
US Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner also held talks in Qatar on Tuesday and Wednesday. During the meeting with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, they discussed compliance with the ceasefire in Lebanon and the status of US-Iran negotiations provided for by the memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran.
On Tuesday, Witkoff and Kushner, at a meeting in Doha with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, confirmed that Washington intends to continue negotiations with Tehran to reach a comprehensive agreement.
