Tokayev proposes restricting social media registration for children under 16

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that measures to protect children's psychological health need to be strengthened.

He said this while speaking about the influence of social networks, digital platforms, AI, and advertising on children.

Tokayev noted that the law "On Protecting Children from Information Harmful to Their Health and Development," which has been in effect since 2018, must be updated to reflect current conditions: "I believe it is time for us as well to move from eliminating consequences to preventing threats to children's psychological state."

The government has already prepared a bill that provides for a ban on social media registration for children under 16. The document was submitted to parliament in June.

The president instructed the government to strengthen oversight of digital content available to children.

According to him, relying solely on parental responsibility is not enough.

Tokayev instructed that the use of mandatory children's SIM cards be expanded. In his opinion, this should help provide children with additional protection from negative influences.

The Kazakh president also instructed the government to study the issue of restricting advertising of fast food and sweets aimed at children.
