WSJ: Hegseth proposed reducing US military presence in Europe

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth planned to announce a large-scale reduction in the US military presence in Europe, but his idea was rejected.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports this, citing sources.

“He planned to state that the US is preparing additional reductions of its troops in Europe, which would go beyond the canceled deployment of an armored brigade to Poland and the previously planned withdrawal of an infantry brigade from Romania,” the publication states.

The material notes that Hegseth planned to “make a sensational statement” at a meeting with NATO’s top military leadership in Brussels. According to the publication’s sources, the Pentagon chief’s proposal was rejected after it became known to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other high-ranking officials. Instead of a large-scale reduction of the US presence, it will be slightly revised over the course of six months.
