Hamas intends to dissolve the administration that has ruled the Gaza Strip for almost 20 years
Hamas is preparing to dissolve its administration, which has governed the Gaza Strip for almost two decades, representatives of the Palestinian Islamist movement told AFP on Monday.
This decision could pave the way for the territory to be governed by an already formed technocratic committee, whose mission is to guarantee Palestinian representation in the institutions of power in Gaza. This move by Hamas, if implemented, would become an important political turning point for the Islamist movement, which seized power in the Gaza Strip in 2007 after clashes with Fatah, the party of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, based in Ramallah on the occupied West Bank.
"The movement has decided to dissolve the Gaza Steering Committee and appoint a person with national consensus to oversee the work of the committee until the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza officially assumes its duties," a Hamas representative told the agency on condition of anonymity. The Hamas government press service in Gaza announced an "important press conference" later on Monday. "The movements welcomed Hamas's decision, calling it a serious step for the National Committee to take on its role in governance," another representative of the group said.
A few months after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, triggered by the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the Islamist movement announced its readiness to step down from power in the Gaza Strip in favor of another Palestinian leadership. Since then, many scenarios have been proposed, but the situation on the ground has stalled. One of the main sticking points remains the disarmament of Hamas, which claims that it recognizes this only as part of a Palestinian political initiative that Israel rejects.
The dissolution of the Hamas committee governing the Gaza Strip opens the way for the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), led by Ali Shaat, which is expected to take over the day-to-day management of the territory. The NCAG was formed by decision of the Peace Council, established by U.S. President Donald Trump. However, it has been outside Gaza for several months.
