Zelensky considers possibility of dismissing Ukrainian armed forces commander-in-chief
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is considering the possibility of dismissing Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) Oleksandr Syrskyi, but on the condition that he finds a worthy replacement for him, writes the Financial Times (FT).
The publication notes that Syrskyi's leadership of the AFU has become a reason for protests that intensified after Zelensky dismissed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
According to a senior official in the Ukrainian president's administration, this weekend Zelensky is gathering military commanders to hear their assessment of the situation on the battlefield and to conduct interviews with candidates for the position of commander-in-chief.
An FT source reported that Zelensky is prepared to remove Syrskyi from the post if he can find a commander who will ensure a seamless transfer of power while maintaining a strong defense along the 1,200-kilometer front line.
As a reminder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently decided to dismiss Mykhailo Fedorov from the post of defense minister.
The reason for the dismissal is allegedly the lack of effective communication between the Defense Ministry and the AFU leadership, namely Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
The president's decision to dismiss Fedorov caused outrage and criticism in Ukrainian society. In various cities of Ukraine, people took to the streets in protest.
