Pashinyan says Armenia is betting on multi-vectorism
The diversity of foreign policy vectors and the diversification of ties are key elements of Armenia's balancing policy, while statements by foreign partners reflect natural international dialogue.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said this at a briefing on August 20.
Answering a question about integration processes and the position of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) countries regarding European integration, Pashinyan urged that partners' statements not be viewed as ultimatums. "The statement by the leaders of the EAEU countries in support of the idea of holding a referendum is not a demand, but a friendly gesture. The very thesis that at a certain stage a referendum is necessary belongs to us. We are pleased that our partners share this position and do not oppose Armenia's European agenda. In international relations, states constantly indicate their interests, and this is a normal process," the prime minister emphasized.
He noted that the key difference between the current course and the previous policy has been the replacement of mono-directionality with full-fledged multi-vector cooperation. "Previously, we had strategic engagement in only one direction. Today we are building and developing relations with Georgia, China, France, the Netherlands, Kazakhstan and other states. Balancing can also be traced in the military-technical sphere: if previously 85-90% of cooperation was with one country, now we work with dozens of partners. At the May parade, equipment and weapons from seven different countries were demonstrated, which clearly reflects this diversification," Nikol Pashinyan remarked.
The head of government also added that similar principles of diversification are being applied in the economic sphere as well, where a balanced approach is already demonstrating tangible results.
