Media: Ankara and Damascus may conclude a military agreement
Turkey and Syria may conclude a new agreement on cooperation in the military sphere amid Israel's attack on the Abu al-Duhur military airfield in Idlib.
The document also proposes updating protocols for responding to possible threats from Tel Aviv, the newspaper Türkiye reports.
The Syria TV channel earlier reported that the Israeli Air Force attacked the Abu al-Duhur military airfield in Idlib on August 18. The U.S. president's special envoy for Syria and Iraq, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack, told the I24 television channel that the airstrike could lead to a sharp escalation, up to a direct military conflict between Israel and Turkey. He reported work on creating a mechanism to prevent conflicts between Israel, Syria, and Turkey.
According to Türkiye, Ankara, as preventive measures in response to threats from Israel, proposed holding joint exercises, as well as having Turkish AWACS aircraft and Air Force fighter jets carry out continuous patrols of border areas. Among the medium-term measures, the newspaper names the closure of Syrian airspace to military flights.
Turkey is providing large-scale assistance to Syria's new authorities in reorganizing and modernizing its armed forces and in training military personnel. Military cooperation between the two countries is carried out on the basis of a memorandum signed in August 2025 in Ankara.
