Nearly 1,600 hectares of forest burned overnight in southwestern France

In the area of the commune of Luglon in the Landes department in southwestern France, 1,580 hectares of forest burned overnight.

As Oxu.Az reports, this was announced by the CNews television channel, citing regional prefect Gilles Clavarel.

According to Arnaud Fabre, director of the fire and rescue service of the Landes department, the situation was favorable at first. "However, at around 04:30 (06:30 Baku time - ed.) the fire flared up again," the channel quoted Fabre as saying. "This is an area that is difficult for our equipment to access. That is why we had to deploy a significant part of our forces. Thanks to great efforts, firefighters managed to contain the spread of the fire."

It is also noted that about 650 people were evacuated because of the spread of the fire.

This is already the second major fire in this department in a month. At the end of July, another wildfire in the area of the commune of Biscarrosse engulfed 3,700 hectares, and 200 structures were destroyed by the fire. At the same time, in the neighboring department of Gironde, firefighters were battling the largest wildfire in history, which covered a total of 42,000 hectares. In all, during 2026, according to the European Forest Fire Information System, territories with a total area of about 100,000 hectares were affected by fire in France.
