Old and new nuclear power plants, diversification: what the Armenian cabinet's program proposes in the energy sector

The government of Armenia will choose the technology for a new nuclear power plant by the end of 2027.

This is stated in the program of the government of Armenia for 2026-2031, approved at a cabinet meeting on Thursday, Sputnik Armenia reports.

The choice of technology is listed as a minimum program, but it is not further specified by what deadline the government intends to build the new plant. As for the operating plant, it is planned to complete the second stage of extending its service life (thanks to which the plant will be able to operate until 2036).

In general, the program states, energy sources will be diversified, both existing and new ones (production of environmentally clean hydrogen).

It is noted that by 2040 it is planned to bring the capacity of solar and wind power plants to a total of 2,000 megawatts. To ensure the stability of generation, by 2031 it is planned to install at least 800 megawatts of storage capacity.

For integration into regional energy grids, construction of the Armenia-Iran 400-kilovolt power transmission line will be completed, and construction of a 400 kV line to Georgia will begin. To expand energy networks, a dialogue will be established with Turkey, Azerbaijan, and the countries of the wider region.
