Iran tells US of readiness to abandon nuclear program for five years

Iran, during talks with the US in Islamabad, proposed suspending uranium enrichment for up to five years.

This was reported by The New York Times (NYT), citing officials from Iran and the US.

According to the publication, Tehran made a similar proposal during negotiations in Geneva in February, after which US President Donald Trump decided to launch an operation against Iran. During the meeting in Pakistan, the US proposed a 20-year moratorium on uranium enrichment to Iran.

The discussion of timelines for suspending the nuclear program indicates that the parties have a chance to reach an agreement, the newspaper believes. A new round of negotiations is being discussed, although no specific agreements on it have been reached yet, White House representatives stated.

As previously reported by the Axios portal, Tehran, during the talks, put forward an initiative that envisaged freezing uranium enrichment for a period of less than 10 years.

On April 11, Iran and the US held several rounds of negotiations in the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad. The Iranian delegation was led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, while the American delegation was headed by Vice President JD Vance. As both sides later informed, they failed to reach an agreement on the issue of long-term conflict resolution due to a number of contradictions. The prospects for dialogue between Tehran and Washington remain unclear.
