Trump comments on Magyar's victory in Hungarian elections
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is not concerned about the defeat of Viktor Orban's FIDESZ party in the Hungarian elections and that he likes the country's "new prime minister," Peter Magyar.
This was reported by ABC correspondent Jonathan Karl on the social network X following an interview with Trump.
"I think the new guy will do well — he [Peter Magyar] is a good man," the journalist quoted the American president as saying. Trump also noted that Magyar was a member of the FIDESZ party in the past and holds views similar to Viktor Orban's on migration issues. The Republican is confident that Magyar "will do well."
Additionally, Donald Trump stated that the FIDESZ party was significantly behind its competitors, so it would have made no difference if he or Vice President J.D. Vance had traveled to Hungary to campaign for Orban.
"He was way behind," Trump said. "I didn’t really get into it. But Viktor [Orban] is a good man."
Peter Magyar joined the FIDESZ party in 2002. After the party's victory in the 2010 elections, Magyar became a government official. The politician left the party in February 2024. The Tisza Party (Party of Respect and Freedom), which Magyar joined in 2024, opposes EU migration quotas and the redistribution of migrants.
On March 24, President Donald Trump openly urged Hungarians to vote for Viktor Orban. "Hungary: get out and vote for Viktor Orban. He is a true friend, a fighter, and a winner, and he has my complete and total endorsement for re-election as Prime Minister of Hungary," Trump wrote.
Later, on April 7, J.D. Vance visited Budapest. He held a joint press conference with Orban, during which he stated that the FIDESZ leader is a true statesman capable of acting as a peacemaker. "I’m also here because Viktor is a statesman whose leadership is far more constructive in terms of peace than the leadership of many other countries," he said.
