Magyar suggests possible arrest of Netanyahu during visit to Hungary

The leader of the 'Tisza' party, Peter Magyar, who will soon become the Prime Minister of Hungary, has suggested the possible arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits Hungary.

He made this statement in response to a journalist's question during a press conference in Budapest.

'I have made it clear to the Prime Minister [of Israel, Netanyahu] <...>. As of June 2020, the 'Tisza' government has declared its intention to end this and keep Hungary as a member of the International Criminal Court. If someone is a member of the International Criminal Court and a wanted person enters the territory of our country, they must be detained,' Magyar said in response to journalists' questions about whether the Israeli Prime Minister would be arrested if he 'really comes here [to Hungary].'

In November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Following this, the EU's foreign policy service representative, Peter Stano, stated that all EU member states support the ICC and must execute its warrants, including the one for Netanyahu's arrest.

In April 2025, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced his country's withdrawal from the ICC after the court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu. The head of government stated that this international judicial body had become a tool of politics. Following this, Netanyahu visited Budapest, where he held a meeting with Orban.
