Reuters: Ukraine transfers technology to US for countering Iranian drones

The United States has started using Ukrainian technology to counter Iranian drones at a key airbase in Saudi Arabia.

This was reported by Reuters.

It is noted that the technology in question is the Sky Map management system, deployed at Prince Sultan Air Base.

Ukrainian military personnel arrived at the base to train their American counterparts on operating the system, the publication reports. The system is used to detect enemy drones, including Iranian Shahed models, and to coordinate response actions using interceptor drones.

As Reuters notes, a month ago, US President Donald Trump publicly rejected an offer from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to assist Washington in combating Iranian drones, stating that such assistance was not needed.

Since the beginning of the conflict in the Middle East, Prince Sultan Air Base has repeatedly come under drone and missile attacks from Iran. Notably, an E-3 AWACS long-range radar detection aircraft was destroyed, and KC-135 tanker aircraft were damaged.

As a reminder, on February 28, the US and Israel launched a military operation against Iran, striking several cities. The operation led to an escalation in the Middle East, drawing all Persian Gulf countries into the conflict and resulting in the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran, the US, and their allies reached a ceasefire agreement on the night of April 8, 2026, which expired on the night of April 22. Trump announced on April 22 that he was extending the ceasefire regime.

The parties attempted to hold negotiations in Pakistan to resolve the conflict, but the first round, held on April 11-12, did not yield any results. A new round of talks was expected on April 22, but Iran refused to send its delegation to Pakistan due to disagreements with the US over the functioning of the Strait of Hormuz.

As a means of pressuring Tehran, the US announced a blockade of Iranian ports and passage through the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Iran declared a blockade of the Strait for ships heading to Persian Gulf countries. The dynamically changing situation in the region has triggered a global energy crisis.
