Why would I need this? Trump rules out nuclear strike on Iran
US President Donald Trump has stated that he has no intention of using nuclear weapons against Iran, as, according to him, American forces have already destroyed the military potential of the Iranian army.
In a press conference at the White House on Thursday evening, Trump made several statements regarding the crisis in the Middle East.
One of the journalists asked whether he might use nuclear weapons against Iran, and the US President called the question foolish.
"Why would I need this?" he asked in response. "Why would I use nuclear weapons when we have completely destroyed them with conventional means, without resorting to it? No one should be allowed to use nuclear weapons."
Shortly before announcing a ceasefire in the war against Iran, Trump had threatened the country's authorities with the "death of an entire civilization," which some commentators interpreted as a discussion of the possible use of weapons of mass destruction. In particular, Trump promised to destroy Iranian infrastructure, including power plants and bridges.
Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether the US and Iran intend to resume peace talks. They were scheduled to take place this week in Pakistan, but Iranian leaders refused to participate, explaining that the US continues to blockade the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier, Trump promised that "good news" about the negotiations might emerge by the end of the week, but no new information has been received so far. On Tuesday, the US President announced that the ceasefire with Iran would be extended indefinitely and that he awaits specific proposals from Tehran.
On Thursday evening, Trump denied reports by some media outlets claiming that he wanted to end the war as quickly as possible.
"I have virtually unlimited time, but Iran does not — the clock is ticking!" the head of the White House wrote on his Truth Social network. "A deal can only be made if it is suitable and good for the US, our allies, and the rest of the world."
