Media: Congressional Democrats may sue Trump over operation in Iran
American lawmakers from the Democratic Party are exploring the possibility of filing a lawsuit against U.S. President Donald Trump if he continues the military operation against Iran after May 1 without obtaining Congressional approval.
This was reported by Time magazine, citing sources.
Under the War Powers Resolution of 1973, the U.S. President is required to notify Congress within 48 hours of deploying troops to foreign combat zones and may use them without legislative approval for no more than 60 days, with a possible extension of up to 30 additional days if that period is necessary for the safe withdrawal of American forces from the conflict zone.
As the publication notes, Trump officially informed Congress on March 2 about the start of military actions against the Islamic Republic, meaning the head of the White House has until May 1 to continue the operation without lawmakers' approval.
Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate from the Democratic Party believe that the approaching 60-day deadline may provide them with the best opportunity to challenge a war they consider to have been started illegally, writes Time. For now, discussions about filing a lawsuit are in the early stages, the magazine notes, but this process could intensify if military actions continue after May 1.
