Northern Caspian Sea shallows: scientists record expansion of islands

A study of the northern part of the Caspian Sea has shown that the sea level continues to decline and the area of the islands has increased two to three times in recent years.

The press service of the P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences reports this.

"An increase in the coastline has been identified on already existing and newly forming islands. For example, the area of Chistoy Banki Island has doubled compared to 2019 due to the drop in the Caspian Sea level and the shallowing of new zones on its eastern, western, and southern sides. There is also a high dynamic of area increase for the island that formed at the site of the Tbilisi Bank, which has expanded three times compared to last year," the statement says.

The studies confirm the trend of progressive sea level decline. "Obviously, one thing is clear so far — the sea level continues to fall," concluded the head of the expedition, junior research fellow at the Caspian Branch of the IO RAS Ivan Ermakov, whose words are quoted in the statement.
