35 dead seals found on Caspian coast in Kazakhstan
Employees of the ecology department of Kazakhstan's Mangystau region discovered 35 dead endangered seals on the coast of the Caspian Sea.
This was reported by the department's press service.
According to the statement, the animals' carcasses were found in the region's Tupkaragan district near the city of Fort Shevchenko and the village of Bautino on May 19. Specialists took water samples at the site.
Earlier this year, dead seals had already been found on the Caspian coast in Kazakhstan, with about 300 carcasses discovered from late April to mid-May. On May 19, the ecology department of the Mangystau region also reported that water samples from places where dead animals had previously been found showed no pollutants.
The Kazakh Ministry of Agriculture had previously reported that department specialists are also conducting studies of biomaterials taken from the dead animals, but no diseases have been detected. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the animals' deaths may be related to natural phenomena, such as gas emissions during earthquakes. Cases of seal deaths have also previously been recorded on the Russian coast of the Caspian Sea.
