Media: US plans to reduce military presence in NATO structures
NATO may face a significant reduction in American military participation.
This is reported by Der Spiegel, citing its own sources.
According to the publication, Pentagon envoy Alexander Veles-Green notified partners in Brussels about US plans to reduce contributions to the NATO Force Model planning and deployment mechanism.
The matter concerns reducing the combat units provided to the alliance, including fighters, ships, drones, and refueling aircraft. According to Der Spiegel, the US expects European allies to take on most of these tasks.
It is reported that Washington may reduce the number of fighters and strategic bombers by about a third, as well as reduce the number of destroyers allocated for NATO operations. In addition, according to sources, US submarines will no longer be made available to the alliance.
European countries will also have to independently provide unmanned systems for reconnaissance.
At the same time, the US states its continued participation in the nuclear deterrence system in Europe and counts on a rapid increase in the contribution of European alliance members. According to Der Spiegel, Washington expects specific proposals from partners as early as the beginning of June.
