Candidate from Azerbaijan elected member of UN Human Rights Committee

On June 15 in New York, as part of the 42nd meeting of the states parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the candidate from the Republic of Azerbaijan was elected a member of the UN Human Rights Committee (ICCPR) for 2027–2030.

This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan.

In the elections, held amid high international competition, candidates from 16 countries alongside Azerbaijan competed for nine vacant seats on the Committee.

Professor of international law at the Geneva Institute of International Relations Fuad Zarbiyev, nominated by the Republic of Azerbaijan, received the largest number of votes already in the first round of voting, securing the support of 131 countries, and was elected a member of the Committee.

The UN Human Rights Committee is the body that monitors implementation of the 1966 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The Committee consists of 18 independent experts, reviews the fulfillment by states parties of their obligations under the Covenant, and plays an important role in the development of international law in the field of human rights.
