Iran threatens response if US violates memorandum
Iran's National Security Council stated that it has a plan for retaliatory measures in the event of the United States violating the memorandum signed between Washington and Tehran, the state television channel IRIB reports.
"In case of any deviation or violation by the United States, a retaliatory strike will be carried out in accordance with a predetermined plan," the statement said.
"Iran will not rest until all the rights of the Iranian people are restored," the National Security Council emphasized.
On Thursday night, U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian remotely signed a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the U.S. consisting of 14 points. It was published by both leading American and Iranian media.
Earlier on Friday, the Swiss Foreign Ministry stated that the U.S.-Iran talks scheduled to take place in Bürgenstock would not take place.
"Talks between the U.S. and Iran, scheduled for Friday on the implementation of the 14-point agreement, (...) have been canceled," Guardian writes, citing a statement from the Swiss foreign policy agency.
A White House spokesperson reported that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance would not travel to Switzerland on Friday for talks on implementing the memorandum of understanding with Iran.
At the same time, the spokesperson added that the U.S. "looks forward to the earliest possible start of technical negotiations." He noted that plans for technical negotiations have not yet been agreed upon, and the U.S. delegation is ready to depart at the first opportunity.
In accordance with the memorandum of understanding signed by Iran and the U.S. this week, both sides must conduct technical negotiations within 60 days, in particular on the fate of Iran's nuclear program, to reach a final peace agreement. This 60-day period, according to Vance, started on Thursday, June 18. American media in this context noted that thus the deadline for the final agreement between the parties is August 17.
Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth also warned the day before that "the United States will resume military actions and reimpose a blockade against Iran if it does not fulfill its obligations under the agreement with the U.S." He indicated that the U.S. position is aimed at ensuring compliance with the agreement, including on Iran's nuclear program.
