France decides to extradite grandson of Carol II to Romania

The Paris Court of Appeal has decided to extradite Pavel-Filip Hohenzollern, grandson of former Romanian King Carol II (1893-1953), to Romania.

This was reported by the Ştirile ProTV channel.

According to its data, after the verdict was issued, French authorities did not find the former king's grandson at his home and added him to the list of internationally wanted persons.

It is noted that Pavel-Filip has five days to appeal this decision. The Romanian Ministry of Justice reported that the Paris court's decision "is a success of effective cooperation between France and Romania."

In April 2025, as reported by the Digi24 channel, Pavel-Filip was detained in France and placed under house arrest at the request of Romanian law enforcement. In Romania, he is accused of corruption, money laundering, and manipulations with land plots previously belonging to the royal family.

This is not the first case when the 77-year-old grandson of the former Romanian king has come to the attention of European law enforcement agencies. In early 2024, he was detained in Malta and held in custody for two months, after which he was released on bail. According to Politico, the Maltese court refused to extradite him to Romania due to his advanced age and "unique position due to the history of the Romanian monarchy." Pavel-Filip's lawyer stated that the persecution of his client is related to political motives ahead of the presidential elections.

Pavel-Filip Hohenzollern is the grandson of Carol II, who ruled the country from 1930 to 1940. In 2020, the Romanian High Criminal Court sentenced him to 3 years and 4 months for corruption and real estate manipulations in the suburbs of Bucharest. At the time of the verdict, Pavel-Filip was in France.
