The Aurigid meteor shower will be visible in the sky over Baku
From today until September 5, the Aurigid meteor shower will be active.
As reported by the Department of Astrophysics of the Faculty of Physics of Baku State University (BSU), the peak of the meteor shower's activity will occur on September 1.
According to the information, Aurigid meteors enter the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of about 66–67 km/s. Because of such high speed, they leave bright but short-lived flashes in the atmosphere. The vast majority of meteors burn up completely at an altitude of 70–100 km and do not reach the Earth's surface.
The most favorable time for observing the Aurigids from Baku is the night of August 31 to September 1, especially in the hours from midnight to dawn. At this time, the radiant rises high enough above the horizon.
Since the maximum altitude of the radiant for Baku is about 61°, during actual observations it will be possible to see an average of up to 5 meteors per hour.
No telescope is required to observe the meteor shower. The best result can be achieved by observing with the naked eye under the open sky, far from city lights. It is recommended to look not directly at the radiant, but at an area of the sky 30–40° away from it, since it is in this direction that meteor trails appear longer and more distinct.
