German foreign minister: Armenian voters confirm desire to reduce Russian influence and deepen ties with Europe
On the June 7 parliamentary elections, Armenian citizens confirmed their support for the country’s pro-European government.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul published such a post on his Instagram page.
“Armenian voters recently confirmed their support for their country’s pro-European government, which testifies to the continuing desire to reduce Russian influence and coercion, and to deepen ties with Europe,” the German foreign minister stated.
According to him, like many other countries in the world, Armenia, Moldova, Ukraine, and Hungary “have recently been countering Russian influence campaigns in their own way, becoming stronger not only for themselves but for all of Europe.”
He also reported that the European Union recently opened the first cluster of accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine. According to the German foreign minister, although this does not mean that any of the countries will become an EU member overnight, it confirms the parties’ commitment to this goal and provides a clear plan of reforms that will ultimately strengthen all of Europe.
In his post, the German foreign minister also touched on Hungary, where parliamentary elections were held several months ago: “Hungary has elected a new government, ending years of political deadlock that hindered the adoption of important European decisions. With the new government, Hungary is opening the door to closer European cooperation, thereby making us all stronger.”
