Turkish parliament speaker says what prevented peace between Russia and Ukraine
Peace between Russia and Ukraine was not achieved at the time due to the unwillingness of some countries to resolve the conflict.
This was stated by Speaker of the Turkish Parliament Numan Kurtulmus at the NATO parliamentary summit in Istanbul.
The speaker of the Turkish parliament stressed that the republic "made enormous efforts to conduct peace negotiations between both sides and significant progress has been achieved to date." "Just a few hundred meters from this building, in the working office of the president in Dolmabahce, the Russian and Ukrainian sides sat down at the negotiating table," Kurtulmus said. "Projects of an almost final agreement were then signed. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances of that time, some countries did not want peace, and it was not achieved."
At the same time, he noted that "those negotiations cannot be called completely fruitless" and "successes were achieved on a number of issues." "Undoubtedly, one of them is the opening and maintenance of the Black Sea grain corridor. Thanks to it, it was possible to prevent hunger, especially on the African continent," he recalled. "Also, as a result of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, it was possible to carry out repeated exchanges of prisoners."
Kurtulmus addressed the summit participants and said that from the alliance's side "I would like to see the prevalence of a similar approach in other pressing issues, both regional and global." "A good example of this is the recent positive step taken to end the war between the United States and Iran, which affected not only our region but the whole world," he added.
