Britain plans to charge migrants $13k for provided asylum
The United Kingdom plans to require migrants to pay up to £10 thousand (approximately $13.2 thousand) for housing and basic household needs before they receive the right to apply for a residence permit.
This is reported by Reuters citing the kingdom's government.
According to the proposal, the fee will be charged only to adults who can afford it, while precautions will be taken to prevent their impoverishment, the government stated. The rules will not apply retroactively.
The British Home Office has calculated that accommodating asylum seekers costs an average of $30.83 per person per night in temporary housing and $190.96 in hotels, plus weekly living payments. In total, annual expenses for accommodating and supporting asylum seekers last year amounted to about $5.3 billion.
