Keiko Fujimori becomes Peru's first woman president
Right-wing Popular Force party candidate Keiko Fujimori has won the presidential elections in Peru.
The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) reported this on June 30.
According to official data from the agency, after processing 100% of the ballots, Fujimori received the support of 9,223,396 citizens, which amounted to 50.135% of the votes. Her main opponent, Roberto Sanchez, representing the political organization Together for Peru, received 49.865%. A total of 9,173,755 voters cast their ballots for him.
Fujimori became the first woman in the country's history to be elected to the highest state post through democratic means. In 2022, Dina Boluarte assumed the position of president, but she received the powers after parliament removed her predecessor, Pedro Castillo, from office for attempting to dissolve the legislative body.
