Key topics of NATO summit in Ankara named
Digital transformation of NATO, the use of artificial intelligence in defense, and raising the level of countering cyber threats in general will become some of the key topics of the North Atlantic Alliance summit in Ankara on July 7-8.
This was reported by the newspaper Türkiye, noting that in this context special attention will be paid to China’s technological development.
As the publication notes, China is defined in NATO’s strategic documents as a technological and strategic competitor, although it is not directly considered a military adversary. However, its technological growth is under the close attention of most alliance countries. In this context, NATO, writes Türkiye, is developing joint projects to protect critical communication systems, strengthen data protection, and reduce dependence on imports in strategic technologies.
In this regard, it is assumed that the NATO leaders’ summit in Ankara should become one of the main events that will determine the process of the alliance’s digital transformation. As expected, topics of developing defense systems based on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and technological cooperation within NATO in the defense industry will be discussed. Discussions will be held on increasing the resilience of digital infrastructure in alliance countries and improving the capabilities of joint actions against new generation threats, the publication notes.
These issues will also be discussed in the context of increasing overall defense spending, which the alliance agreed on at the previous summit in The Hague. Other strategic issues will also be at the center of the summit’s agenda. These include the Ukrainian conflict, the situation around Iran, as well as the topic of increasing Europe’s defense capability and strengthening cooperation in the defense industry, the newspaper writes.
Turkey, as the publication notes, is of critical importance for the security of the eastern and southern flanks of the alliance. Its defense industry is capable of contributing to NATO’s technologically oriented transformation. Therefore, within the framework of the summit in Ankara, a separate defense industry forum will also be held, the purpose of which is to strengthen interaction between NATO member countries on issues of production, integration, and supply of weapons.
